For reasons I have never fully understood, the upper pool at Kahana Valley has always haunted me most whenever I have left the island for any extended period of time. On the east side of the bank is this grove of bamboo. On the west side of the stream is a large gnarled mango tree. The scene is so tranquil you almost expect to hear shamisen music in the background.
